But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.— Psalm 3:3
When David wrote Psalm 3, it was one of the worst times of his life.
He was fleeing for his life because his son was coming to kill him and to pronounce himself as the new king! Absalom had rallied the troops and peoples against David. They were on the hunt to find him.
Why was this happening to David? Didn’t God establish him as king over Israel? Why was he running for his life? David made a lot of wrong choices and as a result his family was an absolute disaster! You could say that David brought this on himself by his choices and decisions.
And yet . . . in the midst of these wrong choices, bad decisions, while running for his life, David writes this amazing Psalm. He declares the Lord is a shield about him! He is not bemoaning his circumstances; he is not living in regret of his choices and how his kids turned out – that his son was out to kill him! He was not wallowing in self pity or waffling between the “what if” and “if only”. Instead he says of the Lord….I am wrapped in your love! You are a shield about me – over me, under me, beside me, in front of me, and behind me. I am covered on all sides with your love no matter what it looks like.
Verse 5 says that he lay down and slept! How do you sleep when you are fleeing for your life? There is only one way and that is knowing you are safe. David knew the Lord’s covenant love and he rested secure.
Being hunted, David knew he was at death’s door. They wanted to kill him and take over the kingdom. He was well aware of what the people were saying about him and what was going on. With the feelings and circumstances surging against him, he chose to say, “but You, O Lord are a shield for me”. He knew the covenant love of God and declared the Father’s love surrounded him, no matter what it looked, seemed or felt like, no matter the choices he had made.
Notice he says, “Yes this is happening, BUT, You O Lord are a shield about me”. He didn’t say first, “the Lord is my shield” and then but all this is happening to me. No, he concluded by saying, “In spite of all these things, you are still a shield about me. These circumstances are overwhelming me, but in the middle of it I know and declare You are surrounding me”.
He knew the God of covenant love. He knew who he belonged to and thus he knew who he was – God’s blessed, and anointed.
Today ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you that the shield of the Father’s love is all around you no matter what it looks, seems, or feels like. Picture yourself engulfed in the Father’s love. As you come to know the Father’s love, you will then come to know who He is, who you are and that you belong to Him.
