When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
— John 2:9-10

As the servant pours out the wine, he sees rich red wine. He hears the MC shout, “What is going on? This is the best wine ever! Usually, the worst wine is served at the last, but this is the best!”
Jesus is probably watching and smiling. He’s having His own private enjoyment. He just revealed His glory, but not through preaching or teaching. His glory is seen through the shining forth of who He is – compassionate and good – spontaneous kindness. This lovingkindness just gave them a free gift of 180 gallons of wine, enough to feed the entire village. God’s glory is in the details of life, in everything – things we feel are too small and unimportant. But this is God, the Son, showing us what God, the Father is really like.
The young couple didn’t know what was happening until much later. They were an anonymous couple who looked like a nobody. We don’t even know their names and they most likely couldn’t read or write. Why does He turn water into wine? I don’t know. It’s not going to affect the history of the world, and yet, for no good reason, He does it. He saved a couple from the shame of a superstitious village. Jesus just “happened” to show up.
This is the Jesus who lives in you, who is in every detail of your life. Few people really care what happens to us. A mistake was made and some would say, “They should have planned better. It’s their fault, so let them live with it.” But not Jesus. He loves you too much. And He did this so easily, no spiritual warfare. He made no demands except telling the servants to fill the pots and pour out a cup of wine. Abba’s love is! You can’t earn it, you can’t buy it or twist His arm or scream loud enough to get it. It just is! Trust in Him who cares for you.
