I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
— Galatians 5:16 (NKJ)
We have to choose to walk in the Spirit. And we also have to choose to put away the feelings of the flesh. Remember – we don’t always get what we want, but we always get what we choose.
We are learning what it means to say we always get what we choose, not what we necessarily want.
Let’s talk about relationships. This is a big one because we’ve all been hurt by someone. It may be by a friend, coworker, boss, neighbor or family member. Then self pity jumps on us and If we allow it to stay, we go down into a pit and live there for a while. We go over the offense again and again feeling worse every time.
The difficulty is that we usually see only our side and think the other person or persons need to apologize in order for things to be right. That may be true, but in order for us to hear the Holy Spirit, we must open ourselves up and allow Him to show us if we had a part in this misunderstanding.
This is not easy because who wants to admit that you could have done things differently? Not me. I want to be the perfect person, so please don’t point out a default or weakness in me. However, I can only be healed if I am willing to see things from God’s view. Remember, He never shows you things to condemn you, but to help you.
I have learned not to be afraid of honesty. I can choose to stay in my mindset and plead and beg for things to be different or I can choose to be open and willing.
There are lots of scriptures about how to handle offenses. You can say you forgive, but what happens when the person reaches out and you reject them because it’s not the way you wanted. It’s your choice to let go, forgive and respond with love and forgiveness.
By continuing to hold on to an offense, you are choosing your flesh over the Spirit. You are not getting what you want which is to be reconciled. Instead you are getting what you choose which is to live by your emotions.
Choose God’s Light over darkness and choose to walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh.
