If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

This month we are going to talk about how we make Jesus Lord of our lives. The verse above says that to receive salvation, we must declare that Jesus is Lord as well as believing in our heart that God raised Him from the dead. We can say Jesus is Lord, but what does that look like in our everyday life?
Again, God gives us choices. In the picture above, do you notice that something is missing? Look again. There is no door knob on the front door. Doesn’t that seem strange?
I remember growing up and seeing a painting of Jesus by a man named Holman Hunt. Jesus was holding a lantern with one hand and knocking on the door with the other. One of his friends saw the picture and said, “Holman, you made a mistake, you forgot to put a handle on the door”. To which Holman replied, “No, that was not a mistake. I purposefully left it off because Jesus is a gentleman and He would never force a door open, especially not the door to your heart”.
The door only opens from the inside and the choice to open it is yours. If you want Jesus to come in and visit with you, you must make Him Lord of your life and invite Him in.
As we will see, making Jesus Lord means we choose to follow His teachings and His example. Instead of giving in to your flesh (feelings) such as self pity, anger, anxiety, gossip, depression, fear or worry, you follow Jesus’s example and his teaching of what to do when you have these emotions. That is making Him Lord. You yield to Him instead of your flesh.
You have to renew your mind to find out who the new you is, what He taught and how He responded in difficult situations. Then you choose not to be lord of your life, but to let Jesus be Lord and you follow His way.
This is simple, yet challenging, because it’s easier to give in to your flesh. However, when you do things your way, you have no peace or joy.
Even though the choice is yours, God gives you grace to be able to make Him Lord when you decide you want Him to be. May you be informed and encouraged by this month’s devotionals. He is cheering you on, never condemning. So . . . .
