22 Give the mirror-word your undivided attention; do not underestimate yourself. Make the calculation. There can only be one logical conclusion: your authentic origin is mirrored in the word. You are God’s poem; let his voice make poetry of your life.
23 Anyone who hears the word, sees the face of their birth, as in a mirror. The difference between a mere spectator and a participator is that both of them hear the same voice and perceive in its message the face of their own genesis reflected there;
24 they realize that they are looking at themselves, but for the one it seems just too good to be true; this person departs [back to the old way of seeing themselves], and immediately forgets what manner of person they are; never giving another thought to the one they saw there in the mirror.
— James 1:22-24 (Mirror Bible)
This month we will be looking closely at Gideon and his response to the word from the Angel of the Lord.
Gideon did exactly what it says in the above, verse 24. He looked in the mirror where the word of the Lord defined him and immediately, he forgot what manner of person he was. He was being defined by the Lord, “this is who you are, Gideon”.
He heard it, discarded it and continued in the old way of seeing himself. He defined himself as a “nobody”. He looked in a mirror within himself rather than looking in the mirror of what the Angel of the Lord said.
How often do you devalue and underestimate yourself? It takes conscious awareness to look in the mirror of God’s word, and keep that image in front of you day and night. Take that image with you so that in the face of any and everything that comes against you, you are able to rise above it.
The image of who you are is found in the mirror and that mirror is Jesus. The wallpaper of this month shows that so well…..look in the mirror and see the Lion of the tribe of Judah, Jesus, and know that as He is in this world so are you. 1 John 4:17. Accept God’s word that defines you and let God’s view of you be the definition of who you are.
“You are defined by God’s word. NOTHING can change that!”
