“The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.”
— John 2:1-2
Jesus left His work as a carpenter, went down to the River Jordan where John baptized Him and then was led into the wilderness for about six weeks. After that, he chose six disciples and then made His way up the hills to the small village of Cana bringing His disciples. He had not been around for some time, but now went with His mother to a wedding. It is most likely that this couple was either related to Mary or they were very close friends. She may have been in charge of the catering because the servants and caterers did what she said.
In those days, weddings usually lasted seven days. The bride and groom were like the king and queen during this time. There was lots of joyful dancing and music filling the air. Jewish people were a Covenant people and this wedding was a covenant event with two people being joined together. Jesus came to celebrate with them. He probably took the hand of those there and danced laughing and rejoicing with them. Jesus was human and understood everyday life. He was not and is not stuffy.
This picture shows Jesus immersing Himself into human life – our life. He got into family life, village life, work life, the necessities of life. There is nothing we do that He has not walked in – birthdays, holidays, marriages, graduation. Jesus worked as a carpenter for 20 years or so, paid bills, stood by his earthly father’s graveside and comforted His mother. These things were known in the experience of God. He has been there. Don’t think of Him walking in life with a halo around His head. No, He knows what’s happening in your life right now and says; “I’ve been there; I understand; I am with you.” Jesus walked in your shoes but kept His eyes on the Father.
