And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
— John 2:3-5
Mary, naturally, would be very distressed over the fact that there was no more wine, particularly, if she were a relative of the couple. They were up in the hills where it wasn’t easy to buy wine, so she probably said anxiously, in a crisis tone, “they have no more wine”! This is another reason to believe that she may have been in charge of catering because only the kitchen staff knew besides the MC.
Some people were superstitious and would have thought this was an Omen – bad luck on the marriage. So Mary was very concerned. She had not seen a miracle from Jesus, but after 30 years, she had learned to trust His wisdom. And because He had left home, she knew something was different about Him.
The term “woman” does not sound very nice to us, but in that culture it was actually a term of great honor and respect. The correct interpretation is, “ my dear lady”. Then He was telling her, “we are not on the same page”, but He was not being disrespectful. He’s explaining – the wine has run out and you want me to do something – drama!
However, God is never overwhelmed and not to be pushed in panic. Jesus says “my time has not come; I will act in my Father’s timing and that is always in a base of peace.” Jesus is here to reveal the Father’s love, compassion and peace. He simply says, “Get on my page – trust Me and come out of panic. And she does because it’s obvious her tone changes when she says to the servants, “do whatever He tells you to do; it is now in His Hands. It might be a little weird, but I trust Him!”
Jesus does not respond to fear or crisis, only to the Father. He became still to see what the Father was going to do. And we can do the same thing in our moments of crisis.
