“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!”
— Deuteronomy 30:19 (NLT)
These words were spoken by Moses to the Israelites just before they crossed over the river Jordan to enter the Promised Land. Here we are made aware again that God is giving them a choice. He is telling them the best path, but He will not make the choice for them.
God has given us the freedom to choose. However, He will not sovereignly make the right choice for us.
Mankind chooses, makes a wrong choice, and then blames the consequences on God. We ask, “why didn’t God fix this?” or “why did He allow this?” And on and on it goes – accusing and blaming God.
The next statement is the one we are going to be focusing on this month. It will benefit us to pay attention and meditate on it:
“We don’t always get what we want, but we always get what we choose”!
You may be thinking, “what do you mean?” or “how is that?”
Well, you may really want something, but you are not willing to do things God’s way by listening to His instructions or leading, so you choose to continue your way while begging God to change the situation or a person.
God loves you; He is for you; you are the apple of His eye; He has only good for you, but He will not override your choice – your will. You are getting what you choose.
Ponder this saying all week and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what it means.
“What you choose is what you get”
