But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God…
— Jude 1:20-21 (NKJ)
“Built up in faith by the Holy Spirit” is keeping yourself in the love of God. It is not keep yourself in YOUR love for God, but keep yourself in HIS love for you.
Keep means to guard, to protect, to continue in the love of God. His love is there; I have it and I am to stay in it. Reminding myself and renewing my mind (Romans 12:2) of who I am in Christ. Colossians 1:23 “Remain under the influence of what your faith knows to be true about you…” (Mirror Bible)
He, Love, doesn’t let me go based on what is going on around me. He is always with me. I live in the very heart of LOVE.
The enemy tries to steal this from you by saying that you have to earn Gods favor, and in order to stay in His good graces you have to do something to prove your love for God.
We say “God, I love you so much. See what I am doing? I am serving you, I am confessing the word. I am praying for people. I am fasting.” I am doing, doing, doing. So the question now is, where is the emphasis in these statements? The emphasis is on me.
When we adopt the lie of independence into our lives, we are alienating ourselves from God, Love Himself. The mind, our thoughts, alienate us from God (Colossians 1:21). Our behavior then follows expressing independence that I must do for God to gain His approval.
It is a trap of the enemy to shift focus from God and His love for me to my love for Him. I think He can’t love me until I fast, pray, confess, serve, study, read etc… and it is never enough. However, Jesus is the foundation of my faith, not me.
I am to guard, protect and stay in this truth that God loves me. Again, Colossians 1:23 “Remain under the influence of what your faith knows to be true about you…” (Mirror Bible)
Here is the truth, you are His Beloved which means you are esteemed, very dear, His favorite, dearly and well loved, He is pleased with you, fond of you and contented with you. This is God’s heart towards you.
