Your fathers continued to scrutinize me suspiciously, examining me as though my intentions with them could not be trusted, even though they were eye-witnesses of my miraculous works for forty years.
— Hebrews 3:9 (TMB)
We have spent a lot of time looking at the heart and its contributing factor in the direction of our lives. Begin to note how many verses you come across that mention the heart. There are so many because the heart is at the center of everything we do. God is a heart God.
It may look one way on the outside, but your heart is the deciding factor on which direction you go. This is why it is so important to take time and let the Word discern, analyze and sift through your heart. Your core beliefs reside in your heart, the seat of your identity. If your mind and mouth are saying one thing, but deep in your heart you believe something else, the heart wins every time.
In Hebrews 3:9, we see the Israelites examined, challenged, doubted, and scrutinized God as if He were not to be trusted. In Hebrews 4, we see the Israelites hardened their own hearts. In their hearts, they believed God was not good and therefore, could not be trusted.
This is where we need to let the Word of God be the discerner of your heart as in Hebrews 4:12. Let it show you what you believe. Then, take responsibility for any wrong beliefs, change directions and choose life. It is important to meditate on who God says He is and who He shows Himself to be in the life of Jesus.
Take time to dismantle any wrong beliefs about God; take responsibility for those beliefs and begin the rewrite on your heart with truth. Rewriting your heart is heart transformation, not behavior modification. Rewriting your heart beliefs is about the truth of who God is, who you are and how your relate to those around you.
Trusting in God all starts with what you believe about who He is. Do you believe He is really trustworthy?
