Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; . . .
— Proverbs 29:18 (ASV)
Where there is no mental picture of seeing yourself as God describes you, you have nothing to hold on to so you let it go – cast it off. However, when you get a vision of the new you, you have hope.
Most of us live by what we see, feel, hear, taste and smell. If we feel sad, we become depressed; if we feel hurt or offended, we think about it over and over; If we feel self pity, we give in to that. We may read that Jesus said he came to give us a better life, but how do we take hold of it?
A victorious life doesn’t automatically appear. First we have to believe what Jesus says and then get a vision – a mental picture of living that life. This is done by using our imagination. I grew up believing that if I saw myself differently from what I actually felt or knew to be true, I was being dishonest. I allowed this temporal life, the one that is seen, to rule me.
The truth is I am being dishonest when I see myself differently from how God sees me. He has made me a new creation. As I get that vision, I am able to actually walk in it. It takes patience and purpose with myself as I learn and believe I am that new person.
Get that vision by using your imagination to help you step into the new you (2 Corinthians 5:17).
