Notice that it says “he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
— Ephesians 4:9 (NLT): Psalm 139:8 (NKJ)
Jesus body lay in the grave after he died, but his soul and spirit went into the realm of the dead. He had the same feelings of despair, abandonment and horror as we have, even fear. David prophesied in Psalm 18:4 “. . . And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.” (NKJ) He went to the lowest part a soul could reach. You know why? So not a part of creation, no dimension of suffering, not a corner of darkness would be untouched by his victory. He never wanted you to go there so he went willingly for you.
Sin makes you feel separated from God. Jesus took that feeling on himself so you would not have to be alone or abandoned. He went into the darkest place and, through faith in the Father and remembering who he was, lit that place up with resurrection power as he left it.
He knows what it’s like to be cut off and surrounded by darkness. So even in your lowest place, you are not forsaken. He will make a way where you see no way because he has conquered loneliness, depression, anxiety, even death.
In your moment of despair, remember where Jesus went and what he did. In that dark place, he called out to God and began to declare that the word of the LORD proves true and that God was his shield equipping him with strength. Remind yourself of God’s love for you.
Would this kind of love ever hurt you? NO, Never!
