Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. But God did not lay His hand on the nobles of Israel; they saw Him, and they ate and drank.
— Exodus 24:9-11 (BSB
How amazing! The Lord revealed Himself in a tangible way to the elders of Israel. They saw the jeweled streets He walks on. They saw Him, the one true God. and did not die. He let them see Himself with their five senses. They saw, heard, ate and drank. They beheld God! Wow!!
Now let’s look farther down the road. We read that two of the elders, Nadab and Abihu offered unholy, unacceptable fire to the Lord and they were struck dead. Really? How can that be?!
They saw His signs and wonders, His care for them in the wilderness. They were in the actual presence of God! Surely they would not do such a thing after their awesome experience. But they did.
This shows us that knowing God with the five senses in an emotional moment does not mean that we know Him in our heart. It was all encompassing and overwhelming at the time, but it did not remain so in their heart.
What happened? Evidently, they did not ponder or meditate on who God was and what they saw and felt, so it did not become a heart belief. They acknowledged the happening in their mind only. Choosing their own way, they rebelled against God.
This is a perfect example of people seeing signs, wonders and miracles and yet still not believing in their hearts.
We must make effort to remember, recollect, ponder, meditate and use our imagination to see God as He says He is. We must make what He says our heart belief, not what the world or our flesh tells us.
May we learn from this and take heed. Let us not harden our heart, but turn to the Lord with our whole heart, not just our intellect.
“The amount of permeating light depends upon the beliefs of your heart”.
