Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
— John 8:12 (NKJ)
There is no need to first clear out the darkness to make room for the light. The light effortlessly and easily expels the darkness. If the light is allowed to come into the space then the light exposes the truth, not the darkness.
Isn’t that an interesting concept?! Take a moment and think about what happened in John 8 with the adulterous woman. The Pharisees brought her before him pointing out her sin. Jesus proceeds to bend down and write on the ground. What is the point of this action? He was deflecting the attention away from her, shifting all eyes to what he was doing. The fact that he did this shows his love and value for her based on truth, not her behavior.
As he stood up, none were left to accuse her. There were no more pointing fingers exposing her sin and shame. The one who had every right to expose her, did not. Instead, he took the attention and shed light upon her. He says to her, your sins are forgiven you, go and sin no more . . . (go and do not believe any more lies about yourself).
We however, tend to focus on the darkness and not the light. We see the behavior, what needs to be gotten rid of, and needs to change. The light is there, not to expose the sin or behavior but to reveal the truth. The truth of who God is shows His character, love and goodness and shows you your real identity, your freedom from sin – the darkness.
If our hearts are hardened and calloused, opposing God’s love and goodness, then we subject ourselves to the darkness and the light can not penetrate. Not because it can’t penetrate, but because we have shut the door to our heart. We are refusing the light, not allowing it to illuminate the truth.
Open your heart to see Abba’s love for you, to see your true identity, your worth. Let the light penetrate into your heart and soul shedding light on truth. If our heart believes that God is looking to point out our sin and shame, then light can not permeate. The beliefs of your heart decide how much light is allowed into your heart.
“The amount of permeating light depends upon the beliefs of your heart”.
