And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
— Gensis 3:8-9 (ESV)
It’s easy to think that God turns His back on us when we do something wrong, but this verse clearly shows that after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they hid. They were ashamed of themselves and felt that God was ashamed of them, too. However, God went looking for them. He pursued them. He did not abandon them.
Adam was alienated from God in his mind. Because he disobeyed, he felt that God was mad with him. But God did not yell at him or beat him up. He went to help Adam face what he did wrong because He wanted to help him.
When you feel God is far away, which we all feel at times, what do you do? Sometimes we wallow in self pity. However, the way we overcome this feeling is to bring forth evidence from scripture and the life of Jesus showing He is always with us. You tell yourself, “God says He will never leave me or forsake me, He says if I draw near to Him, He will draw near to me. He has not abandoned me. He has forgiven me and wants fellowship with me. He still loves me”.
If you disobey or make a mistake, remember that God did not turn His back on Adam and Eve and He has not turned His back on you. He always wants to communicate with you and help you. Look at the evidence in the Word and the life of Jesus. Build it in your heart.
God is looking for you. God desires fellowship with you.
