Sow with a view to righteousness, Reap in accordance with lovingkindness; Break up your fallow ground….
— Hosea 10:12 (LSB)
Our heart is the core of who we are. With the heart, we really see the truth. With the heart, we believe. With the heart, we trust. With the heart, we have faith. With the heart, we see.
The mind may convince us of one thing; the emotions may sway us to believe or not believe something, but the heart tells all. This is why it says in Proverbs, “above all else guard your heart.” You are the one who persuades your heart of one belief or another.
The heart dictates to us the pathways of life. “For out of the heart spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). The heart is at the center of our life whether we know it or not and decides what we believe.
In Hosea 10:12, it says to break up the fallow ground, the hardened ground. Change the beliefs of your heart to the truth of who God is and who God says you are. These are core to living a victorious life. What does your heart believe?
In the month of November and December, we looked at the eight covenant names of God. It came as a surprise to me that my heart did not embrace one of the names of God. I would rush over it. I did not want to stop and meditate on that particular name.
This was not apparent to me until I began to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show me where my heart had wrong beliefs. I was stunned. Of course, I believed in the names of God – all of them! But I noticed a slight hesitation in my heart on one particular name. I had been hurt and disappointed and felt that God was not there in that name for me.
I faced and owned this wrong belief about God. Now, I’m working to change my heart beliefs to fit who God says He is, rather than my experience. Taking ownership of my beliefs instead of denying them has been a big deal, but very freeing.
