When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
— 2 Kings 6:15-17 (NLT)
Understandably, the young servant panicked when he saw that they were surrounded by troops, horses and chariots. Why didn’t Elisha panic? Because His eyes were on the Lord, not the problem. He did not allow himself to be overwhelmed by the seemingly impossible situation. He saw the problem, but he looked to God for the answer.
Our emotions respond to what we focus on. The young man’s emotions filled him with fear, worry and panic. He was a basket case. Elisha’s emotions filled him with peace and calm because he knew God was for them.
When you are facing what looks like a scary or stressful situation, remind yourself that God values and loves you. He proved it. After giving His own son to exchange places with you, He is not going to abandon you now or leave you to work out the problem alone.
Take a deep breath. Send away fear and stress. Thank God for peace and wisdom. Remember, you can only hear Him if you are in peace. He is with you. Remind yourself that His faithfulness goes on forever.
“Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
