The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This was the LORD’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
— Psalm 118:22-24 (NKJ)
“This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
These wonderful words from this verse have come to mean just that. We rejoice in the now moment; we see the day and proclaim the Lord has made it. While this is certainly true and there is no denying that, let’s take a moment to look and see the deeper meaning.
“This is the day the LORD has made…” refers to the specific day when God fulfilled the covenant “as me and for me”. It is referring to this day of redemption, the day of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection – His finished work. This is the day when God made covenant with man, as man – the day my enemy was utterly defeated, the day of my victory, the day of salvation, redeeming grace.
Verse 22 is talking about Jesus as the stone the builders rejected. Jesus is the stumbling stone, a rock of offense. People stumble over Jesus as their righteousness because they are unable to let go of attaining righteousness by their works. He did everything for us. Therefore, instead of our living in the doing, doing, doing; we should live in the done, done, done (Romans 9:33).
Look at verse 23 “This was the LORD’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.” It is referring back to verse 22 “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.” In verse 24 which says, “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” is not referring to the moment we are living in right now. This verse is referring to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
The Lord’s doing is that Jesus became the chief cornerstone. He is the foundation upon which all is built (1 Corinthians 3:11). This is His plan of redemption which is marvelous to us and absolutely amazing. God from God came as us, for us. Our part is to rest in what He has done. There is nothing we “do” to deserve it.
We rejoice in this day by taking communion. For the month of March we are going to focus on the significance of the Lord’s supper for us.
