Tell His Story

March 3, 2024

Declare what God has done.

. . . the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”  For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

— 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 (NKJ)

You proclaim the Lords death til He comes…. What does that mean? This is a way of saying his body was broken and his blood was shed. I declare it by visualizing what the Lord did. I am remembering what happened and also understanding that I was included in HIs death. By my inclusion in His death, I am agreeing that I am now innocent and free from condemnation.

The world we live in is quick to remind us of our unworthiness. Jesus wants us to be reminded of how He has made us worthy because we were included in His death, burial and resurrection. It’s difficult for our mind to wrap around that but He became one of us so He could represent us. Jesus made covenant with the Father, as us. That is why we are included.

Remember how He entered into this time zone as a human. He didn’t come as an adult. He, the Creator, became a seed in Mary’s womb, grew as a baby and was birthed as one of us. He experienced what it was like to grow and learn as a child. The teenage years came and then adulthood while He lived and experienced the challenges of each season of life just as we do.

He was fully human because He had given up His divine qualities, abilities (Philippians 2:7). At His baptismal by John, the Holy Spirit came upon Him, empowering Him. Then we see Him doing miracles. At the end of His ministry on earth, He willingly went to the cross “as us” – taking our place and becoming our representative (John 10:17-18).

When you take the Lord’s Supper, you are declaring to yourself, to principalities and powers what Jesus did for you by including you in His death, burial and resurrection. You are declaring over your body and your circumstances that through Jesus’ death you are not trying to be forgiven or to be whole. You already are completely forgiven and whole, in relationship with the Father again, favored and provided for.

Jesus defeated satan, our enemy, and set us free from the bondage of sin and death. We are free. Sin no longer rules us. Although we still sin, we are not sin’s slave unless we choose to be (Romans 6:6). This is what we are proclaiming, declaring to the world.

By taking communion, you are reminding yourself of what Jesus’ finished work did for you. This is proclaiming the Lord’s death and remembering that you are included.

“Rejoice! This is the day the Lord has made.”
