The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
— Proverbs 18:10 (BSB)
The names of the Lord may be familiar to you: Jehovah Provider, Healer, Victory, Sanctifier, Peace, Shepherd, Righteousness and Present. These are His eight Covenant Names. Yet knowing something and the application of it are two totally different things. We think we apply our knowledge of the Lord’s name but usually we don’t.
My husband and I have been looking diligently for a house for well over a year on weekends and weeknights. With much anticipation, we would think we had found the one only to be disappointed. We got tired and very discouraged.
In today’s market the selection of houses is very slim with prices rising, and interest rates going crazy! Our “need to have” list was ever changing, getting longer and more challenging with the houses that were available.
Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide, was a name I knew and declared often. But all I could see was the lack – nothing out there for us. Things were not looking up, only getting worse.
One evening, the Holy Spirit brought to my attention that I was not really seeing the Lord as Jehovah Jireh. It was a name in my head but I was only saying words. I knew He would provide but all I could see was the high cost, interest rates and low inventory – a near impossibility. I was even thinking that I might need to trim my desired list.
Thankfully, the Holy Spirit showed me that my focus had shifted and I was no longer seeing the Lord as Jehovah Jireh. Instead, I was seeing the problem – our need and the lack. I was thinking that if we had more money, we would find the house. Suddenly I saw that money was not the solution! The solution was in my perspective of the Father and where my focus was.
I had lost touch with who God said He was and needed to own up to the fact that I was fixated on the lack. Both my husband and I realized our focus had shifted. Seeing our mistake, we changed our view from words in our heads to picturing and imagining God as our Provider. He already had the house for us. He knew our budget and would work within that. It was not more money we needed, but a new perspective. We declared God to be the Supplier of our house. We didn’t need more hours on the job or more jobs. God was our Supplier and would give us what we needed and wanted. Our focus had shifted.
Unknowingly, we had become consumed with figuring out HOW this would happen. When we realized this and began focusing on the character of God, that He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider, His Peace came. We countered the thoughts of how and its impossiblility with “God has supplied” and pictured the end, an amazing house.
Literally in 2 days a house came on the market which got our attention. This house checked so many boxes, even the seemingly unnecessary things we wanted like my desire to have a personal mailbox in front of it. The desires on our list were checked off. It was amazing. And it was within our budget. This was the house we had been waiting for. We had shifted from the lack to the supply, from the need or problem to His provision, from the “how” to seeing that we had it.
We have an amazing loving Father who wants us to see Him as He is, as His Names declare Him to be. God is who His Name says He is. His desire is to be that for you today.
