God So Loved

September 7, 2025

Agape love is about the Giver.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

— John 3:16 (NLT)

God’s love is the Greek word, Agape, and is a giving love. However, our interpretation of God’s love comes from the Greek word, Eros. Eros is human love and leaves us with a misconception of God’s love. It limits us in receiving and accepting His love.

Eros is based on performance and beauty. It is a love that must have the best in order for the object to qualify to receive love. If the object or recipient slides down the scale, the old is replaced with the higher quality. This love places value on the condition of the recipient

Eros love causes us to think we have to be a certain way for God to love us. We believe God wants more from us and that we must clean ourselves up in order to make ourselves more acceptable spiritually. We assume He is eager to find our flaws and replace us with another, or at least cast us aside until we are “fixed up” and worthy of His love.

When we think that we are not good enough or not worthy of love, then we are filtering God through human love. But this is not God. He is not defined by human love, nor does He define us by human love. Agape love is who God is. He loves because He is love. It is His nature. He can only do and be who He is – LOVE.

When I consider myself not worthy of His love, I am not being humble, rather this is false humility. I am rejecting God’s love and placing myself and my opinion above His opinion. I am saying to God that what He values is worthless. However, when I see myself as valuable, then I am valuing God and coming into harmony with His view and opinion. He loves me because I have breath.

Agape love is about the Giver of love, not the condition of the recipient. He created us so He could love us. Therefore, we do not have to strive, fix up or do anything to activate or get His love.

He loves you because and only because you exist.

“Because I exist, therefore, I am loved.”
