“…and his mother called his name Jabez, . .”
— 1 Chronicles 4:9
Jewish names were given because of their meaning and Jabez means “causes pain and sorrow.” His mother took her pain and put it on her son. All his life he believed he was no good, worthless, could do nothing right, a bother, a pain bringer. His mother gave him an evil inheritance. She dumped her pain on him and he believed it! So cruel!
He accepted those lies about himself and thought that was who He was. Then, however it happened, he had a revelation of God’s love for him – that he was in covenant relationship with God. He saw that what He had believed was a lie. He was not the pain bringer his mother had said he was.
The light of LOVE exploded in the darkness of the lie. He saw that he was loved and delighted in by God. He prayed that God would keep him from evil (wrong, twisted thinking) that he may not cause pain. He saw that he was defined by what God said, yet he asked God to “keep” him because he couldn’t do this by self effort. His hope, expectancy, was to respond to what He had seen and he declared the truth as he renounced the lie. What a Father! He loves you more than you can think or imagine!! You are His treasure!
