Jehovah Jireh

So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

— Genesis 22:14 (ESV)

From this verse, we get the name Jehovah Jireh which means the LORD provides. Actually, in Hebrew, the word provide means will see. So the LORD sees and provides.

Here God provided a lamb as a sacrifice in the place of Abraham’s son Isaac. 

In the beginning when God formed Adam from the dust of the earth and breathed life into him, He also planted a beautiful garden with every good thing one can imagine in it. Then He put Adam in that garden to enjoy all the good things as well as take care of it. He also said he didn’t want Adam to be alone so he created Eve. 

God provided for his creation in the most loving and caring way from the very beginning. And it was extravagant. He wanted mankind to experience good things, not so man would be selfish, but so he would know how much God loved him. Along with wonderful things to enjoy, God gave him responsibility. This is a picture of God’s generous and loving heart in wanting to provide good things for His children.

This picture of God is one to remember because He has not changed. In fact, He says, “I do not change”. (Malachi 3:6)

Jesus shows us a picture of the Father’s generous provision when he fed the 5,000 plus women and children on the mountain side. There was no giving just enough for people to get by. Absolutely not, because there were 12 baskets of fish and bread left over. Another picture of the generous provision of the Father.

God is your Provider and He wants to take care of you. 

Jesus said He came to give us life abundantly, not just enough to get by, but for us to be blessed. Then as we are blessed, we can bless others. God supplies all of our needs, not according to our ability, education or earning potential, but according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus.

Father God is your Jehovah Jireh, your Provider. Whatever your need, He has provision for you. Everyday this week imagine, ponder on and picture Him as your Jehovah Jireh so this picture becomes a belief in your heart. See Him providing for you. That is who He is.

He is Jehovah Jireh, Eternally your Provider.
