In the past, names were given to describe a person, to show their character. This verse is saying that if you know and understand the names of God, you will know who He is and you will know that you can trust Him.
Let’s look at one of the familiar names of God, Jehovah Rohi. Rohi means shepherd. God is telling us that through Jesus, He is our Shepherd. What does a shepherd do?
As Psalm 23 says, the shepherd looks after the sheep’s needs. He takes care of them by leading them to green pastures, a place of abundant food and water. It’s a peaceful place where the sheep are not afraid. They feel safe and confident in the shepherd’s provision for them. He has a rod and staff with which he protects them. They have no worries because He is there for them and they know they can trust him.
This is a picture of the Father through Jesus. God wants to take care of you and me. That’s the reason He gives us this picture of the shepherd and tells us that is who He is, our Shepherd.
He says that so when circumstances say something different, we are able to say, “No, God is looking after me and I trust Him because that’s who He is”.
Look up the names of God and find out His character for yourself. You will be encouraged.
