God’s rest celebrates his finished work; whoever enters into God’s rest immediately abandons his own efforts to improve what God has already perfected. (The language of the law is do; the language of grace is done.)
— Hebrews 4:10 (Mirror Bible)
In our world we esteem the achiever, the one who is the doer, the one who accomplishes much. We compare ourselves to those around us seeing if either we measure up or if they measure up to what we deem to be success. From this mentality we look at the Christian life and use the doing as a measuring tool. It has become all about what you can do for Him. We feel esteemed by our accomplishments for God and we completely miss God’s measuring stick.
The life of the believer is really about living from Him. It is that humbling of myself to say, I cannot live this life of myself. I humble myself and let go of the “I can, I will” and receive His ability that I can do all things through Christ. This is God’s measuring tool….all things through Him. It is learning to live the life of being “In Christ.”
Living from Him is acknowledging my inability and receiving His ability in all things. It is learning to joy in the I can’t do this….I can’t love my neighbor as myself, I can’t read enough, pray enough, witness enough, I can’t have the right attitude, I can’t shut up my mouth, I can’t have the right thoughts, I can’t do the right thing. It is acknowledging that I can’t and then receiving His ability. This is a humbling of myself and glorying in His strength.
This is the life of Jesus….He recaptured His sight. He looked to the Father for the strength in the doing, not to His own strength as the Son of Man.
