There are friends who are friends, and there is a friend that is closer than a brother.
— Proverbs 18:24 (Aramaic Bible)
The term friend in Bible times had a completely different meaning than what it means to us today, those who live in the west. This verse is talking about covenant, When a person was in covenant with someone they were closer than family. The bond lasted generations and we see this in the story of David and Jonathan.
A covenant was not taken lightly and was a commitment for life. It included all that you were, your very person. You gave all that you had for the other person, you committed yourself to their protection and honor.
This verse in Proverbs is not just a random statement in the middle of the book. It actually finds its fulfillment in Jesus and we see it in John 15:15, “I have called you friends”.
Jesus is our covenant friend. His love, protection and provision for us will never be broken. He calls us friend, covenant friend. A friend is someone who is there for you, a friend is someone who understands, who listens, who cares, who never leaves you, never rejects you but loves you just as you are through thick and thin.
You have such a friend. He has called you friend. You are the friend of the Saviour, Redeemer, the Creator of the universe. He has said that you are his friend. You are never alone for he will never leave you or forsake you. He says to you ” I am your friend who is closer than a brother”.
“He calls me friend.”
