July 2024 Wallpaper

He didn’t come to prove his deity but to embrace our humanity.

The Word became a human being and lived here with us…

— John 1:14 (CEV)

This month we are continuing to look at Jesus in the completeness of his humanity. We have mentioned that many of us, whether we realize it or not, have the notion that Jesus slipped in and out of his divinity as if it were a cloak. We say that Jesus was human but we see it as a garment and not His identity.

When we have the idea of Jesus putting on and taking off his divinity, we are actually diluting what Jesus did for us. He came to show us how to live. He didn’t show us how to live in the fullness of his divinity. No, rather he showed us how to live in the fullness of his humanity.

What does it mean that he came into my humanity to wrap his arms around me? He embraced us by being one of us. It is honestly overwhelming when you realize the great lengths God went to for us.

He showed us we are worth his very person, his total being. He would rather suffer than to have us suffer. He would rather take our pain, our shame, our guilt and our sin  than have us  be laden with it. He removed our burden and says, “I want to take your burden for you so that you don’t have to endure it”.

The only way he could take it was to become the servant of humankind. He came to serve us (Mark 10:45). He came to open the door to freedom from darkness, from fear, worry, anxiety, fear, pain, guilt, shame and condemnation.

He suffered a violent death in the fullness of his humanity so that we would not need to suffer. He came wrapping his arms around us telling us, “I love you and am come to set you free. I have taken your darkness. I have suffered in your place so you don’t have to suffer the consequences.”

The point of Jesus coming was to come AS us. He emptied himself to become one of us. That means He fully identifies with us and is not just empathetically looking on at a distance. He did not come to prove his deity but to wrap his arms around us by embracing our humanity.

“He came into my humanity to wrap his arms around me.”
