He did exactly the same with the cup after supper and said, “This cup holds the wine of the New Covenant in my blood; you celebrate me every time you drink with this understanding”.
— 1 Corinthians 11:25 (Mirror Bible)
Jesus chose to give His blood for you. Nobody took His life from Him. He willingly chose to be the sacrifice for sin. He gave up His life freely because of His love for you and His blood became the blood of the New Covenant.
He died as your representative and paid the penalty for your sins. You and I receive the benefits that His death brought because we are included in His death. Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits”. You have been completely forgiven and made the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus has destroyed satan’s power over you and has freed you from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). You have been set free from guilt, shame and condemnation, not by your works or performance, but by the blood of Jesus.
All fear, worry, anxiety and dread of what might happen or what could happen has been swallowed up in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Taking this cup of wine seals the New Covenant with Jesus’ blood. The enemy has been defeated. Sin no longer has any power over you. You will still sin and make mistakes, but know that you do not have to be the slave of sin. Jesus’ blood has wiped away sin. When you recognize and acknowledge (experience) what He, Love, has done for you, you don’t want to sin anymore. If you continue in sin, you have no understanding of what Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection has accomplished for you.
God wants you and me to drink this cup with the full realization of what Jesus has done for us because then we will receive the benefits.
What a Father! What a Savior! Through His death, He redeemed our original value, identity and innocence. That’s the reason we rejoice and proclaim the victory He has given us. We are not who we once were. Jesus has made us a new person in our spirit. Our job is to renew our mind and find out who we are and begin living that way. God is not an angry God looking to catch us in sin. He is Abba Father, the God full of lovingkindness and mercy towards us, desiring only our good!
“Rejoice! This is the day the Lord has made.”
